Used it once before it died - I purchased one of these 2 weeks ago, backed up my Laptop straight away and put the HD away. I tried over the weekend to back up some more files to it and although the light came on, it wasn t recognized/couldn t be found by my Laptop or the other 2 Computers I tried it on. I think this is an appauling product and will certainly not be purchasing Freecom items in the future.
Perfect for Mac - Not being very technically minded, and owning an Apple Mac, I always get a bit anxious when buying peripherals because all the blurbs I read seem to be geared to the PC market. However, there was no need to worry with this Freecom hard drive. I just plugged it into the USB port on my laptop and it was immediately ready for action. No need to consult the CD manual. How fabulous. Also, brilliant delivery service from Amazon.
Looks good and works well. - I wanted an external hard drive mainly to back up my modest collection of music and photos. This item does the job with the minimum of fuss. It comes formatted in FAT32, but I easily reformatted in NTFS using Windows. This took 50 minutes. The supplied software is very easy to use, no instruction book required really. I like the number of options where you can decide exactly how often you want to back up and under what circumstances. I set it at every two minutes, when a file change is detected.I am also impressed by the metal case and weightiness, it feels really sturdy.Would I buy another? Yes.
Sturdy and portable hard drive - recommended - 149 Gb of storage when formatted, this portable drive is has an aluminium outer casing. Other brands tend to have plastic enclosures but I prefered the metallic look and the hard drive is cool to the touch, doesn t get warm at all!Whisper quiet when in use, cannot hear it at all. Comes with a short ~40cm USB cable and my Macbook Pro laptop powers the drive from the USB port no problems. For those who are interested: inside is a Samsung HM160HI SATA 5400rpm hard drive with 8mb cache (the model may vary though, this is just what is in mine.)Fast transfer speeds over USB 2.0, ~30mb/sI would recommend this for its aluminium casing, cool and quiet operation, small size (literally fits in the palm of your hand), fast access speeds and its powered by USB.Very good price too!
Needs an adapter for Mac Powerbook - This worked fine the one time I tried it on my PC. However, I bought it for the wife and her Powerbook doesn t provide enough power for the hard drive to run without an adapter plugged into the mains. Adapters giving 5V power supply are not very abundant and therefore cost £15-20, so you should either factor in this cost or buy another hard drive if you want to use it with a Mac. I m very disappointed that this fact was nowhere to be seen in the product description.
